As CFO at We Are Rosie, Steve led the establishment of the accounting and finance team, enhancing financial visibility and reducing reporting cycle time by 20%. He installed processed, procedures, KPI’s and reporting to drive data driven business decisions across the company which drove increases working capital and cash balances by 50% and a decrease in DSO by 10% and provide visibility and data for all functions to utilize.

As CEO at Mspark, he sourced and led diligence to execute six bolt-on acquisitions, increasing revenue by 30% (nearly $60M) and adjusted EBITDA by 60% (approximately $20M), surpassing estimated synergies. Steve led a $240M recapitalization, three attempts to sell Mspark and ultimately facilitated a successful ownership transition from private equity to lenders.

At Valassis Communications, he was CFO and then General Manager of a $1.4 billion acquired direct mail division.  Steve led the integration and drove improvements, increasing Gross Profit % by 5.6% and Adjusted EBITDA by 104%. Additionally, Steve was a key member of the sell side team that led the $1.8 billion sale of Valassis in 2014 to private equity firm at a 20% premium to stock price.  He was also a key member of due diligence, financing, integration of proposed $1.3 billion acquisition of ADVO, Inc. and litigation team in attempt to rescind proposed transaction. Responsibilities included all aspects of due diligence, negotiating $1.3 billion in financing and leading accounting/finance, risk management and public company integration.

Steve has nearly 30 years of specializing in professional services ranging from consulting companies to marketing placement agencies to marketing services.  He has participated and led due diligence and financing in over 20 buy-side acquisitions ranging in annual revenue from $500k to $1.2 billion with the majority in the $1M-$20M range. 

Mr. Mitzel earned an MBA in Corporate Strategy & Finance and a BBA in Accounting from the Ross Business School at the University of Michigan.
