Jim Jordan
Sales Tax Consultant
Jim Jordan brings more than 30 years of domestic and international finance expertise to The CEO’s Right Hand. His most recent experience has been analyzing sales tax exposures, planning strategies, and assisting clients to become fully compliant.
The 2018 South Dakota v. Wayfair court ruling dramatically changed the sales tax landscape and introduced a great deal of complexity for businesses and consumers. Every company needs to stay on top of this.
Jim will analyze your company’s sales tax exposure and map out a plan to achieve sales tax compliance. Once a strategy is agreed upon, he will assist with implementing it across your organization, with individual states, and with third-party tax service providers as necessary until completion.
Jim specializes in:
Comprehensive nexus studies
Economic nexus analysis to evaluate and quantify risk. Each state has different definitions and thresholds for when a company must register and different laws on whether certain products are taxable or not. Understanding this is critical for fast-growing companies.
Working with tax engines
Jim’s specialty is with Avalara. He understands their products completely and how they work together and with your ERP system. On each of their three main products (AvaTax, Returns, and CertCapture), Jim can provide hands-on expertise and assistance. He will ensure all interfaces and settings are working properly, tax codes are mapped correctly, and returns are reconciled and filed on time.
Registering with state DORs
Jim can handle implementing an SST registration for 25 states or registering in a single state. He will handle all communications with the state, make sure you receive your license as quickly as possible, and see to it that you are properly set up with sign-on credentials for each state portal to file returns.
Voluntary Disclosure Agreements (VDA)
In high-risk situations, there is an option for some companies to consider minimizing or eliminating interest and penalty charges. It can be a lengthy and detailed process to negotiate a VDA agreement with a state. Jim can lead you through this.
Sales tax exemptions
Rules vary by state. Charitable organizations, local and state governments, schools, and universities may or may not be exempt. Jim is an expert in evaluating your customer’s exemption status and validating certificates.
Day-to-day sales tax work
Jim can also handle your routine sales tax activities. He ensures sales tax is correctly calculated and charged on transactions, files monthly & quarterly returns, requests exemption certificates, and covers any other tax details that need attention.
Changes regarding sales tax often cause deep concern and stress for both customers and sales staff. Jim can ensure changes are made as seamlessly as possible and that good communication takes place at your company and with your customers so things go as smoothly as possible.
Mr. Jordan received a BSBA in Accounting and an MBA in Finance from Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Missouri.
